To archive a Shopify product, open it in admin, click More actions, choose Archive product, and confirm. Archiving hides the product from your storefront and moves it to the Archived tab, while keeping every detail, image, and order history. Prefer archive over delete when you may need the product again.
How do you archive a Shopify product?
You archive a Shopify product from its product details page. Go to Products, open the product, click More actions, choose Archive product, and confirm in the dialog. The product stops showing on the storefront and moves to the Archived tab instead.
The steps, as Shopify documents them in Adding and updating products:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Click the name of the product you want to archive.
- Click More actions.
- Click Archive product.
- Confirm in the dialog.
Archiving is a separate action from the Status drop-down. On the product page, Status offers Active, Draft, and Unlisted. Archived is not a Status option you pick from that menu. You archive through More actions, and once a product is archived you must unarchive it before you can change its status again.
For when Draft is the better hide than Archived, see How to Set a Shopify Product to Draft (vs Archived).
What is the difference between archive and delete in Shopify?
Archive keeps the product in your store with all of its details, but hides it from the storefront and moves it to the Archived tab. Delete permanently removes the product. Shopify says a deleted product cannot be restored, and recommends archiving when you do not want a permanent delete.
Shopify's product details page defines Archived as a product whose details are complete, that is no longer for sale, hidden from sales channels, and moved to the Archived tab of the Products page. Delete is a different path under More actions > Delete product.
A simple choice:
- Done selling, but you may want the listing, SKUs, or history later? Archive.
- Sure you never need the product again, and fine losing it forever? Delete.
- Still working on the listing, or pulling it live for a short fix? Use Draft instead. That path is covered in How to Set a Shopify Product to Draft (vs Archived).
Archive vs Draft in one line: Draft says the product is not ready yet. Archived says the product is finished and no longer for sale. Both hide the product from shoppers. Only Archived moves it to its own tab.

How do you find archived products in Shopify?
Archived products live on the Archived tab of the Products page in your Shopify admin. They sit apart from your other products. Open Products, then click Archived to see every product you have archived. If a product seems missing after you retired it, check that tab before you recreate the listing.
Once you are on that tab:
- Scan or search within the archived list for the product name or SKU.
- Click the product to open its details.
- From there you can unarchive it, or leave it archived.
How do you unarchive a Shopify product?
To unarchive a Shopify product, open it from the Archived tab and use the unarchive action. Shopify sets the product's status to Draft when you unarchive it. The product returns to the Products page as Draft, still hidden from the storefront, until you set it to Active and save.
A careful unarchive flow:
- Go to Products and open the Archived tab.
- Click the product you want to bring back.
- Unarchive the product.
- Confirm it landed as Draft on the Products page.
- When the listing is ready to sell again, set Status to Active and click Save. Publishing to the right sales channels is a separate step from status.
Shopify says you must unarchive an archived product before you can change its status. That is why you cannot jump straight from Archived to Active in one Status click. Unarchive first (you land on Draft), then set Active when you mean to sell again. Should an AI Publish a Shopify Product Without Approval? covers why Active and channel publishing are two different writes.
How do you archive many Shopify products at once?
You can archive multiple Shopify products at the same time with a bulk action on the Products page. Filter to the exact set first, check the selection count against the count you expect, select the products, then run the archive bulk action and confirm. The selected products move to the Archived tab together.
A careful bulk archive flow:
- Go to Products and filter by tag, vendor, collection, or status so only the products you mean to archive remain.
- Read the count Shopify shows for your selection. Match it to the number you planned.
- Select the products with the checkboxes.
- Use the archive bulk action for the selection, then confirm.
- Open the Archived tab and spot-check a few titles to confirm the right products moved.
Shopify's Adding and updating products guide says you can archive multiple products at the same time using a bulk action. Shopify's product details page also notes that in the bulk editor, the Status options include Archived. Prefer the archive bulk action when you are retiring a set, and keep the bulk editor path in mind when you are already editing other columns.
The risk in bulk is scope, not the click. A filter that is one tag too wide can archive best sellers you meant to keep live. Scan the titles and the count before you confirm.
What happens to collections, inventory, and orders when you archive?
Archiving hides the product from the storefront, so shoppers cannot view or buy it. The product can still appear in Collection items inside admin, because archiving does not remove it from collections. Inventory counts and past orders stay. Links and ads that still point at the product page will no longer reach a buyable page.
Shopify's product details page is explicit on collections: archiving a product does not remove it from collections. It stays listed in Collection items in admin, but customers cannot view it because it is hidden from the storefront.
What to expect after an archive:
- Storefront. The product is hidden from sales channels and moved to the Archived tab.
- Collections. Membership in admin collections can remain. Shoppers will not see the product while it is archived.
- Inventory. Status and archive do not zero out stock. Units stay on hand.
- Orders. Orders already placed are not changed by archiving the product.
- Links and ads. Emails, social posts, and ads that link to the product page will land somewhere shoppers cannot buy. Shoperator does not pause, launch, or edit Meta or Google ads, so update those in the tools that run them.
If you later unarchive, remember the product returns as Draft. Set it Active again only when the listing, price, and channels are ready.
Can you archive Shopify products by text with Shoperator?
Mark remains a current Shoperator entry path. For supported product-status work, you set the outcome and scope, review the exact products and before-and-after status, and approve before Shoperator applies the change. A no leaves every product as it was. Eligible connected merchants can also work through a supported personal agent using the same store context and controls; current availability depends on the merchant's plan and rollout.
Bulk requests can include an additional typed-count confirmation so you can verify the selection size before anything moves. After an approved archive, verify that the affected products appear in Shopify's Archived tab and no longer appear on the storefront; the request alone is not proof of completion.
Requests that work:
- "Archive the three discontinued mugs."
- "Archive everything tagged summer-24."
- "Which products are in that 18?"
- "Set the linen shirt back to Draft" (for a short hide that is not a retirement).
What Mark does not do:
- Mark never deletes products. Archive is as far as it goes. Deleting stays a manual step in Shopify admin.
- Shoperator does not pause, launch, or edit Meta or Google ads.
- Unlisted is set in Shopify admin.
