To edit a Shopify product's SEO title and meta description, open the product in your admin, find the Search engine listing section, click the pencil icon, and fill in Page title and Meta description. Click Save. The new text is live on your store right away, but Google can take days to weeks to show it.
How do you edit a Shopify product's SEO title and meta description?
You edit both fields in the Search engine listing section of the product details page. Go to Products, open the product, click the pencil icon in Search engine listing, then type the Page title and Meta description. A preview shows how the result might look in search. Click Save when it reads right.
The steps, as Shopify documents them in Adding and updating products:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Click the name of the product you want to edit.
- In the Search engine listing section, click the pencil icon.
- In the Page title field, enter a descriptive title. This is the clickable link people see in search results.
- In the Meta description field, enter a short description of the product. Shopify suggests relevant keywords and your store name.
- Optional: edit the URL handle, the last part of the product's web address. It can't contain spaces.
- Click Save.
Leave the handle alone unless it is clearly wrong. Shopify warns that editing it too often can keep the product from showing in search results. Some Shopify guides call the edit control Edit website SEO instead of a pencil icon. It is the same section.
Collections, pages, and blog posts have the same section. Your homepage title and description live under Online Store > Preferences, per Shopify's Adding keywords for SEO guide.
What is the difference between the product title and the SEO title?
The product title is the name shoppers see on your product page, and Shopify uses it as the page's main heading. The SEO title is the Page title field in Search engine listing, which becomes the clickable headline in search results. They can differ. If you leave the SEO title blank, Shopify falls back to the product title.
Shopify's product CSV guide spells out both fallbacks:
- SEO title blank. The product Title is used as the search engine listing page title.
- SEO description blank. The product Description is used instead.
That fallback gets messy when the product title is short and branded ("The Weekender") or the description opens with shipping notes or a sizing table. Writing your own fields fixes the search listing without changing what shoppers see on the page.
Keep the two description fields straight, too. The product description is the body copy on the storefront. The meta description is the search snippet field. They are separate fields, and changing one does not change the other. How long should a Shopify SEO title and meta description be?
Aim for an SEO title of 60 characters or fewer and a meta description near 160 characters. Shopify's product form warns that titles over 70 characters or descriptions over 320 characters might get cut off in search results. Treat 70 and 320 as ceilings, not targets.
Where each number comes from:
- 60 characters (title). Shopify's Adding keywords for SEO guide says most search engines shorten longer titles and suggests 60 or fewer.
- 70 characters (title). The most you can enter, per the same guide and the product CSV guide.
- 160 characters (description). The length Shopify recommends for meta descriptions.
- 320 characters (description). Where the product form warns text might get cut off, and the CSV cap.
Google does not publish a fixed character limit. Its title link and snippet docs both say text is truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width. Put the words that matter most at the front so a cut-off still makes sense.
How do you write a good Shopify product SEO title and meta description?
Write a unique title that leads with what the product is, then adds one detail a shopper would search for. Write a meta description that summarizes the specific product in plain sentences and gives a reason to click. Avoid repeating keywords, and never reuse the same text across products.
Shopify's Adding keywords for SEO guide gives four title moves:
- Target the primary keyword. Put the main search term near the start.
- Add a secondary keyword. For example, Shopify expands Sectional Sofas to Modular Sectional Sofas & Couches.
- Highlight a product characteristic. Body Butter becomes Body Butter - Natural & Cruelty Free.
- Mention a customer benefit. Include any limits, such as a free shipping threshold, so the claim stays true.
Google's docs add two warnings: avoid keyword stuffing, and avoid boilerplate titles or descriptions repeated across many pages.
A worked example for a single product:
- Product title: The Weekender
- SEO title: Waxed Canvas Weekender Bag with Leather Handles | Field Co (58 characters)
- Meta description: A 40L waxed canvas weekender with full-grain leather handles and a padded laptop sleeve. Fits most airline overhead bins. Free returns within 30 days. (150 characters)
Every claim in it has to be true for the product and your store policy. Leave out details that change often, like a sale price, so the listing does not go stale.
How do you bulk edit SEO titles and meta descriptions in Shopify?
The documented bulk path is the product CSV. Export your products, edit the SEO title and SEO description columns in a spreadsheet, then import the file with Overwrite products with matching handles selected. Shopify's CSV guide lists both columns, with the same 70 and 320 character caps as the product form.
A careful CSV flow, built from Shopify's export, import, and CSV column guides:
- Back up first. Shopify recommends a backup before any import, and imports can't be canceled once they start.
- Go to Products, click Export, choose the products, and pick the CSV for a spreadsheet program.
- In the spreadsheet, keep URL handle and Title (the required columns for updates) plus SEO title and SEO description. Delete the other columns. Per Shopify, a column left out of the file keeps its current value.
- Write the new values. Add a length column, such as a LEN formula, to catch anything over 60 or 160.
- Fill every SEO cell you keep. A blank cell in an included column overwrites the current value as blank.
- Save as UTF-8, and do not sort the file. Shopify warns that sorting can break variant and image rows.
- Go to Products, click Import, add the file, select Overwrite products with matching handles, review, and click Import products.
- Spot-check a few products in admin, then check your activity log if anything looks off.
Column headers are case-sensitive, and older CSV templates use different names, so keep headers exactly as your export shows them. Shopify documents CSV for these fields. If your bulk editor's Columns menu shows SEO fields, you can use that too, so check it before planning around it.
For the same export, edit, and import routine applied to prices, see How to Bulk Edit Product Prices on Shopify.
Why does Google show a different title or description than the one you set?
Google decides what to show. It builds title links from several sources, including the title tag, headings, and links to the page, and it creates snippets mostly from page content, using your meta description when that fits the search better. It also has to recrawl the page first, which can take days to weeks.
Google's snippet docs say one page can show different snippets for different searches. Shopify's Adding keywords for SEO guide gives the check to run:
- Open the product page in your browser, right-click, and choose View Page Source.
- Find the title tag and the meta description tag near the top.
- If both match what you saved in admin, your store is set up correctly. Any difference in Google is Google choosing other text.
- If the source still shows old text, something on the store is writing the tag. Look at SEO apps and theme code before you edit the field again.
- In Google Search Console, use the URL Inspection tool on that page and request indexing to prompt a recrawl.
Then wait. Shopify notes it can take a couple of weeks for edits to show in search results. If Google keeps rewriting a title, compare it with the page's visible heading. Google's title link docs list inaccurate and boilerplate titles among the common reasons it swaps in other text.
Can you update a product's SEO title and meta description by text with Shoperator?
Mark remains a current Shoperator entry path. For supported product SEO work, you set the outcome and scope, review the proposed Page title and Meta description, and approve before Shoperator applies the change. A no leaves both fields as they were. Eligible connected merchants can also work through a supported personal agent using the same store context and controls; current availability depends on the merchant's plan and rollout.
Requests that work:
- "What's the SEO title and meta description on the linen shirt right now?"
- "Write an SEO title under 60 characters for the waxed weekender."
- "Update the meta description on the ceramic mug to mention it's dishwasher safe."
What to keep in mind:
- After an approved update, verify the saved fields and storefront source. Google still decides what it shows, and on its own schedule; the request alone is not proof of completion.
- Read the preview for claims before you say yes.
- Shoperator does not pause, launch, or edit Meta or Google ads. Paid search ad text lives in the ad tools that run it.
For how to read a preview before you answer, see How to Approve or Reject a Change Mark Proposes. For what happens when you decline, see What Happens When You Say No to Mark, and How to Undo. More examples of requests live in What Can I Text Mark?.
FAQ
How do you edit the SEO title and meta description of a Shopify product?
In your Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product. In the Search engine listing section, click the pencil icon, then enter the Page title and Meta description. Click Save. The change is live on your store right away, and Google updates its listing after it recrawls.
What is the difference between a Shopify product title and an SEO title?
The product title is the name shoppers see on the product page. The SEO title is the Page title field in Search engine listing, shown as the clickable headline in search results. If the SEO title is blank, Shopify uses the product title.
How long should a Shopify SEO title and meta description be?
Keep the SEO title to 60 characters or fewer and the meta description near 160 characters. Shopify warns that titles over 70 characters or descriptions over 320 characters might get cut off. Put the most important words first.
Can you bulk edit SEO titles and meta descriptions in Shopify?
Yes, with a product CSV. Export products, edit the SEO title and SEO description columns, then import with Overwrite products with matching handles selected. Keep URL handle and Title, fill every SEO cell, and back up first, because a blank cell overwrites the current value.
Why isn't my new meta description showing in Google?
Google has to recrawl the page, which can take days to weeks, and it may choose other page text for the snippet. Check View Page Source to confirm your text is live, then request indexing with the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.
