To add tags to a product in Shopify, open the product in your admin, go to the Product organization section, and pick a tag in the Tags field or type a new one and click Add. Then click Save. To tag many products at once, select them on the Products page and use the Add tags bulk action.
How do you add tags to a product in Shopify?
Open the product from the Products page, find the Tags field in the Product organization section, and select an existing tag or enter a new tag name and click Add. Click Save. A new tag is saved for future use, so it shows in the list next time.
The steps, per Shopify Help on adding and updating products:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Click the name of a product to edit, or create a new product.
- In the Product organization section, click the Tags field and select existing tags, or enter a new tag name and click Add.
- Click Save.
Use commas to separate tags when you type several at once. In the Shopify app, tap the product, tap Tags, select tags or type a new one and tap Add, then tap Save.
Product tags are their own list. Per Shopify Help on creating and using tags, a tag you create in one section, such as Products, isn't copied to Orders, Customers, or any other section.
How do you add tags to many products at once?
On the Products page, select the products, open the actions menu at the top of the list, click Add tags, pick the tags, and click Save. Every selected product gets the same tags. Filter the list first, such as by vendor or collection, then select all results to tag a whole group in one pass.
The bulk steps, per Shopify Help on creating and using tags:
- From your Shopify admin, click Products.
- Select the products that you want to tag.
- Open the actions menu at the top of the list, and then click Add tags.
- Select the tags that you want to add.
- Click Save.
Selecting more than one page of products, per Shopify Help on using bulk actions:
- Whole store. Click the checkbox at the top of the list, then click Select all 50+ items.
- A filtered view. Click the top checkbox, then in the 50 selected drop-down, click Select all results. This selects every product that matches your filter.
- A range. Click one product, hold Shift, and click another to select everything in between.
On mobile, you can select up to 25 items at a time, so big tagging jobs are easier on desktop.
How do you edit tags with the bulk editor or a CSV file?
Use the bulk editor when different products need different tags: select the products, click Bulk edit, add tags from the Columns list if it's offered, edit each cell, and Save. Use a CSV import for a large catalog. With overwrite on, the Tags cell replaces each matching product's tags, and a blank cell clears them.
Shopify Help on bulk editing gives the editor steps: select products, click Bulk edit, click Columns to add the properties you want, type in the table cells, then click Save. That page doesn't list the tags column by name, so check the Columns list. On Shopify Plus, Help notes that only 250 tags display when you bulk edit tags.
For CSV, per Shopify Help on using CSV files to import and export products:
- Format. Separate tags in the Tags cell with commas, such as Fall-2023, casual, vintage. Use letters, numbers, and hyphens, and up to 250 tags per product.
- Overwrite. If you select Overwrite products with matching handles, the values in your file replace the values in matching columns. A blank Tags cell overwrites the product's tags as blank.
- Leave it out. If the Tags column isn't in your file, existing tags stay the same.
- Variants. For products with variants, skip the Tags column on the extra variant rows.
Which method to use:
The same bulk editor works for prices. See How to Bulk Edit Product Prices on Shopify.
How do you remove or delete product tags in Shopify?
To remove a tag from one product, open it, click the x on the tag in the Product organization section, and click Save. To remove a tag from many products, select them on the Products page, open the actions menu, click Remove tags, pick the tag, and Save. Removing a tag doesn't delete the product.
The single-product steps, per Shopify Help on adding and updating products:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Products.
- Click the name of the product.
- In the Product organization section, click the x for each tag you want to remove.
- Click Save.
Shopify Help doesn't describe a separate store-wide delete button for product tags. To retire a tag, filter Products by that tag, select all results, and use Remove tags. Help recommends this cleanup because tag suggestions show only your store's first 5,000 unique product tags. Folding similar tags together, such as one summer-sale tag instead of one per year, keeps the list usable.
How do you filter products by tag in Shopify admin?
On the Products page, click Search and filter, choose Tag, and select the tag you want. The list shows only matching products, which you can then select for a bulk action. You can filter by one tag at a time this way, or type a search syntax to filter by several tags.
Per Shopify Help on creating and using tags, product tags also filter the variant list on the Inventory page, and the Shopify search bar finds anything carrying a tag.
One gap: Help says admin search and tag filters don't support finding products with no tags. To find untagged products, export your products to CSV and check the Tags column.
How do product tags work with collections?
A tag can decide which products join a collection. In a collection's Products source, click Add condition, choose Tag, pick includes, and select the tag. Every product with that tag joins automatically, including ones you tag later. Use does not include to keep tagged products out instead.
Per Shopify Help on understanding conditions for collections:
- In a Products or Variants source, click Add condition > Tag.
- In the second drop-down menu, select includes.
- Click the Select tag field, and then select the tag.
Some Help examples word the same condition as Product tag is equal to. Either way, the condition is only as clean as your tags. Special characters are ignored or treated as the same, so a condition for red-new also pulls in products tagged red_new, red+new, or red&new.
Tags and collections do different jobs. A tag is an admin label on a product. A collection is a group shoppers can browse. Help also lets you filter a collection menu link by tags so it shows only matching products.
Do product tags show in storefront search and filters?
Shoppers don't see tags by default, but tags still work for them. When a shopper searches a term that matches a product tag, the tagged products show in your store's search results. With the Shopify Search & Discovery app, you can also turn tags into a storefront filter on collection and search pages.
What Shopify Help says to know:
- Search. Per Shopify Help on creating and using tags, tagged products display in storefront search results for a matching term, and tags with common misspellings can help shoppers find products.
- Filters. Per Shopify Help on adding filters with Shopify Search & Discovery, Tags is one of the standard filters. For a tag filter, you can switch the logic so choosing New and Sale shows only products with both tags.
- Theme and language. Filters need a compatible theme, and the product tag filter shows only to shoppers browsing in your store's default language.
- Some themes show tags. Per Shopify Help on tag formats, some themes display tags, such as in filter menus, so write tags a shopper can read.
Tags don't help Google. Shopify Help says tags aren't used by search engines. For product SEO, edit the search engine listing instead. See How to Edit a Shopify SEO Title and Meta Description.
What tag format rules should you follow?
Keep tags short and consistent, and stick to letters, numbers, and hyphens, such as spring-clearance. A product tag can be up to 255 characters, and a product can carry up to 250 tags, or unlimited tags on Shopify Plus. Avoid accented letters and symbols, which can break search and collection matching.
The rules, per Shopify Help on creating and using tags and tag formats:
- Characters. Use only letters, numbers, and hyphens. Help says letters with accents and other symbols can exclude search results.
- Near-duplicates. Because special characters are ignored, you can't save sale25% if sale25 already exists. Shopify treats them as the same tag.
- Capitalization. Shopify Help on creating and using tags says tags aren't case sensitive, so Approved and approved are the same tag. Shopify Flow's Add product tags action says tags are case sensitive. Pick one style, such as lowercase, and use it everywhere.
- Spaces. Help's troubleshooting steps say to check for extra spaces before or after a tag when it won't save or filter.
Help's own example: at the end of summer, find products tagged Summer and use a bulk action to hide them from your sales channels. To take products off sale entirely, see How to Set a Shopify Product to Draft (vs Archived).
Can you add product tags by text with Shoperator?
Yes, for the tags on a product. Mark is a current entry path: send something like "Add the tag summer-sale to the Linen Camp Shirt," review the preview, and approve before Shoperator changes the live product. Slack collaboration is available on Mark 3 and Mark 4. Eligible connected merchants can also use a supported personal agent when their membership, agent, store, and workflow allow it. After approval, verify the product in Shopify.
These stay manual steps in Shopify admin:
- Tagging many products at once with the Add tags or Remove tags bulk action.
- Creating or changing a collection that uses a tag condition.
- Search & Discovery filters.
- Order tags and customer tags, which are separate lists from product tags.
Order tags are their own question. For why an AI shouldn't stamp them on its own, see Should an AI Add Shopify Order Tags Without Approval?. How do you bulk add tags to products in Shopify?
On the Products page, filter the list if you need to, select the products, and use Select all results to include every match. Open the actions menu, click Add tags, choose the tags, and click Save. Every selected product gets the same tags.
How many tags can a Shopify product have?
Shopify Help says you can apply up to 250 tags to each product, and stores on Shopify Plus can have unlimited product tags. Each product tag can be up to 255 characters. Help also notes that tag suggestions show only your store's first 5,000 unique product tags.
How do you remove a tag from all products in Shopify?
Filter the Products page by the tag, select all results, open the actions menu, click Remove tags, choose the tag, and click Save. Shopify Help doesn't describe a separate store-wide delete button for product tags, so removing the tag from every product is the way to retire it.
